What Are ESG Consulting Services? Why Does Your Business Need Them Now?

ESG consulting services help businesses integrate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices into their core operations — ensuring regulatory compliance, managing business risks, and building long-term stakeholder trust.

In India, ESG is rapidly moving from optional to mandatory:

  • SEBI's BRSR framework now requires the top 1000 listed companies to file annual sustainability reports
  • Global buyers (H&M, Walmart, Tesco, Decathlon) demand SA 8000, SMETA, and ISO certifications from Indian suppliers
  • The Factories Act and state fire safety regulations require fire safety compliance for all manufacturing units
  • Institutional investors now screen companies on ESG scores before making investment decisions

At DLV ESG Consulting Group, we don't just prepare reports — we build compliance systems, train your teams, and get your business certified. We serve listed companies, export-oriented units, and MSMEs across India, from Gurgaon to Tirupur.

6. Carbon Footprint Assessment & Net Zero Advisory

Carbon Footprint Calculation & Net Zero Roadmap for Indian Businesses

India has committed to Net Zero by 2070 and 50% non-fossil energy by 2030. As these targets trickle down through regulation, investor pressure, and buyer requirements, businesses that act now will be far better positioned than those that wait.

Our carbon management services include:

  • Scope 1 (direct), Scope 2 (energy), and Scope 3 (value chain) GHG emissions inventory
  • Carbon footprint calculation as per GHG Protocol Corporate Standard and ISO 14064-1

    Common Questions

Frequently Asked ESG & Compliance Questions

Straight answers on BRSR, ISO certification, fire safety, and social compliance audits — based on what businesses actually ask us before they sign on.

What is ESG consulting, and does my business actually need it?

ESG consulting helps a business turn environmental, social and governance requirements into a structured, auditable system instead of a one-off paperwork exercise. You likely need it if you're a listed company facing SEBI's BRSR mandate, an export unit being asked for SMETA or SA 8000 audits by international buyers, a factory pursuing ISO certification, or an MSME supplying any of the above and being asked to share ESG data as part of a larger company's supply chain.

Which companies are legally required to file BRSR in India?

SEBI's BRSR mandate currently applies to the top 1,000 listed companies in India by market capitalisation. Companies outside that list, including those listed on the SME exchange, can file BRSR voluntarily — and many do, because their institutional investors or large buyers ask for it anyway.

What's the difference between BRSR and BRSR Core?

BRSR Core is a narrower, stricter subset of the full BRSR — nine key performance indicators that require independent third-party assurance rather than self-reported disclosure. It's being phased in for the top listed companies first, and is gradually extending down the value chain to their major suppliers.

How long does a BRSR report take to prepare?

The framework covers roughly 140 disclosure points — 98 mandatory essential indicators and 42 voluntary leadership indicators — across nine principles. For a company reporting for the first time, data collection, internal sign-off, and drafting usually takes 6–10 weeks; it moves faster in later years once the data systems are already in place.

How much does ISO certification cost in India?

Cost depends on which standard you're certifying against, your organisation's size and number of sites, how much documentation you already have in place, and which accredited certification body you choose. Costs vary widely across the industry, so always get a written, itemised quote covering consultancy, documentation, audit, and certification body fees — and treat the lowest quote with caution, since a rushed or under-documented system often fails at the external audit stage.

How long does ISO certification take, and does it expire?

Most first-time ISO certifications (14001, 45001, 9001, 50001) take 3–6 months from gap analysis to the final certification audit, depending on how ready your existing documentation is. The certificate is typically valid for 3 years, but it isn't "set and forget" — certification bodies require annual surveillance audits to keep it active.

Is fire safety training and a Fire NOC legally mandatory for my business?

Yes, for most factories, warehouses, offices and commercial buildings. The requirement comes from the Factories Act 1948, the National Building Code, and your state's local fire safety regulations, enforced through the Fire No-Objection Certificate (NOC) issued by your local fire department. Fire NOCs for commercial premises typically need annual renewal, and periodic staff training and drills are expected even between renewals.

What's the difference between SA 8000 and SMETA — which one do I need?

SA 8000 is a certifiable standard — you pass an audit and receive a formal certificate. SMETA, developed by Sedex, is an audit methodology, not a certification — the auditor produces a report uploaded to the Sedex platform for your buyers to view, rather than issuing you a certificate. Which one you need usually isn't your choice — it's whatever your specific buyer or retailer has written into their supplier code of conduct, so confirm their requirement before booking an audit.

We're not a listed company — why is our buyer asking us for ESG or BRSR data?

Large listed companies must report their value-chain (Scope 3) emissions and supplier practices as part of their own BRSR filing, so they push ESG questionnaires down to their suppliers — including MSMEs. The same happens with export buyers, who increasingly require SMETA or SA 8000 audit reports before placing or renewing orders, regardless of whether your company is itself "required" to report under SEBI rules.

What's the difference between BRSR and GRI reporting?

BRSR is SEBI's mandatory, India-specific disclosure format for listed companies. GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) is a voluntary international framework used by large corporations and investors worldwide. The two aren't competing standards — BRSR's principles are designed to map onto GRI, TCFD and SASB, so a single underlying data-collection process can usually feed both reports.

Can you handle ISO certification, BRSR, and fire safety together, or do we need separate consultants?

We run them together deliberately, because the underlying work overlaps. Documentation built for ISO 45001, for example, covers a large part of your fire safety audit requirements, and the materiality assessment behind your ESG strategy directly feeds your BRSR disclosures. Splitting these across multiple consultants usually means redoing the same documentation two or three times.

We've been certified — is that the end of the process?

No. ISO certificates need annual surveillance audits and a recertification audit every 3 years. BRSR is an annual filing requirement, due alongside every year's annual report. Fire safety NOCs need periodic renewal, and refresher training is expected even between renewal cycles. Most of our engagements include a maintenance plan for exactly this reason.
